Timing is everything!
Nowhere is this more critical than in the college application process. From taking the ACT and SAT, to writing your personal essay, to submitting your Common App, the process takes months if not years to complete. This can be overwhelming and stressful for a 17 or 18 year old still needing to focus on their high school classes, extracurriculars, and social life. Particularly, if they’re not getting sufficient support in the process from their high school counselor or family.
So when do you need to finish gathering all your application materials and submit them to your colleges? Well, that all depends on their deadlines. There are thousands of colleges in the U.S. all of whom may offer one or more of the following application options: Regular Decision (RD), Early Action (EA), Early Decision (ED), and/or Rolling Admission (RA). The first three options have set deadlines, while RA applicants have a much broader window in which to apply.
When preparing to apply you have to carefully research each school’s policy. Some EA schools place restrictions on your applications to other colleges. ED involves a binding contract in which you pledge to enroll in the school if you are accepted.
Make sure you understand the rules, as well as, the pros and cons of each application option for each college, before selecting an option for your applications.
These are some very critical factors when planning out an application strategy.
